Handmade Fabric Flowers

Our fabric flowers begin with waste from tailors' workshops in Bangalore — offcuts of saree lining, the layer of fabric tucked inside a saree blouse. We collect this waste directly from the tailors, segregate it by hand, rescuing it before it can be thrown away or burned. Once sorted, the fabric is ironed flat, cut by hand, and tied — petal by petal — into the shape of a flower. There's no glue anywhere in the process; every flower holds its shape purely through the way it's tied. At the centre of each one sits a coconut broom stick in place of a stem, standing in for the plastic or wire you'd normally expect. They would have been smoke. Instead, they become something to keep.
